City Councillor Resignation

March 10, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit has received and accepted the resignation of City Councillor Sam Tilley. The seat is considered vacant effective immediately.

Mayor Solomon Awa thanked Councillor Tilley for their service to the community.

“Serving on Council requires a great deal of commitment and care for the community. On behalf of Council and the residents of Iqaluit, I want to thank Councillor Tilley for the time, effort, and perspective they brought to the work of Council. We understand that decisions like this are not always easy. At times, taking the time to focus on personal priorities is the right step, and we respect that decision.”

City Council and staff thank Councillor Tilley for their contributions to the community during their time in office and wish them well moving forward.

Under the Nunavut Elections Act, Council has two options to address the vacancy created by the resignation. Council may offer the seat to the next highest polling candidate from the most recent municipal election or appoint a qualified resident to fill the vacant seat for the remainder of the term.

City Council is expected to consider these options at an upcoming Council meeting in accordance with the Nunavut Elections Act. Additional information will be shared with residents once a decision has been made.
