Change the Time - Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries.

Public Service Announcement
Change the Time - Change Your Smoke Detector Batteries.
March 11, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Iqaluit Emergency Services would like to remind all residents to check your smoke detectors and change the batteries with the upcoming time change.

Smoke detector facts:

• Smoke detectors have an expiry date, generally 10 years
• Hardwired smoke detectors have a battery backup
• Dust can collect on smoke detectors, ensure they are kept clean
• Smoke detectors save lives!

Most fatal fires occur at night when people are sleeping. Should there be a fire during the night, a working smoke detector will alert everyone inside. If your smoke detector goes off and there is any sign of smoke or fire, exit the building immediately and ensure everyone is out safely, then call the Fire Department at 979-4422.

Practice your family emergency exit plan, test your smoke detectors monthly and change your batteries with the time change. Check the expiry date on your smoke detectors and replace any that are expired. Any questions or concerns contact the non emergency Fire Department phone line at 979-5650.
