July 6, 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement Department conducted random sobriety and road safety checkstops throughout the City of Iqaluit on Canada Day July 1st 2023.

Approximately 150 vehicles were checked throughout the operation. Municipal Enforcement is pleased to report that no drivers were suspected of operating a motor vehicle while being impaired by drugs or alcohol.

38 vehicles were found to be operating without the required documents in the vehicle, 10 vehicles were found with an illegal coating of sunscreen or tint on their windows, 7 drivers were found operating their vehicle without carrying their driver’s license on them as required, along with various other traffic violations.

Most vehicles that approached the checkstop officers observed both driver and passengers were not wearing their seat belts, which is required under territorial and municipal law and subject to a $125.00 fine.

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department would like to thank the general public for their compliance in driving safe, and would like to remind the public if you suspect an impaired driver on the road to contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at 867-979-1111 immediately.
