Assembly Recognises Iqaluit’s Women Firefighters
June 2, 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
On May 31st, Iqaluit-Sinaa MLA Janet Brewster invited members of the Iqaluit Fire Department to the Legislative Assembly to be recognized for the role women play in providing Iqaluit’s emergency services.
On March 8th, for the second year in a row, the Iqaluit Fire Department’s team on call was made up entirely of women, to celebrate International Women’s Day. Created in1911, International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the globe.
Brewster praised the Iqaluit Fire Department for honouring International Women’s Day, and what it stands for. In her Member’s Statement, Brewster noted, “Empowered girls become empowered women. Mr. Speaker, I’m proud of these hardworking women and all of Nunavut’s first responders.”
