Reporting to the Director of Public Works & Engineering, the Superintendent – Sanitation Operations is responsible for leading the two Divisions of the Public Works Department that fall under the Sanitation Fund, specifically Landfill and Sanitation (Waste Collection). In this role, the incumbent performs a variety of complex supervisory, administrative and professional tasks in planning, organizing, directing and supervising these divisions.
More specifically, the Superintendent – Sanitation Operations is required to develop project plans, purchase supplies, allocate resources, estimate and monitor job costs, assist subordinates in resolving work and performance related issues, and liaise with other City of Iqaluit departments, developers, contractors, utility companies, and both Federal and Territorial agencies in the coordination of projects. Considerable independent judgment and action are expected to be exercised in performing the work.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
University or technical school education in Civil Construction, Civil Engineering, Waste Management or equivalent
5 or more years experience in a Public Works Department (Northern experience is preferred)
3 - 5 years experience managing staff in a unionized environment
Excellent human resource management and proven leadership skills
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Must possess strong organizational and managment skills
Must understand and have computer sytems skills
Experience in the coordination and implementation of comprehensive Health & Safety system
A valid driver's license
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures used in solid waste collection, disposal, landfill and compost activities
Must have strong computer skills
ASSETS
Ability to plan, coordinate and prioritize several projects simultaneously
Ability to prepare detailed progress reports
Ability to apply economic and accounting principles and practices in the analysis of financial data

Ability to speak Inuktitut
Equivalencies that include a combination of education and experience may be considered.
All relevant certifications are required at time of application. The successful candidate would be required to submit a Criminal Record Check, as well as an acceptable Driver’s Abstract.
