
Iqaluit City Council approves the allocation of Reaching Home funding for 2021-2022
Iqaluit City Council approved the allocation of over one million dollars of Government of Canada funding to community organizations serving the vulnerable and at risk residents of Iqaluit.
The City received $1,182,126 of funding from the Government of Canada under the Reaching Home community-based program aimed at preventing and reducing homelessness, which is to be used in the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
On June 22, 2021, Council approved the 2021-2022 funding to be allocated accordingly:
- Issue a new Contribution Agreement with Uquutaq Society for annual funding of $410,000.00 to support their provision of shelter facilities for homeless men and diverse genders at a low barrier shelter.
- Issue a new Contribution Agreement with Tukisigiarvik Society for annual funding of $272,000.00 to support their elder and vulnerable population food programs, counselling and laundry services.
- Issue a new Contribution Agreement with Qajuqturvik Community Food Centre for annual funding of $85,000.00 to support their food service and delivery program for vulnerable populations
- Issue a new Contribution Agreement with YWCA Agvvik for annual funding of $297,000 to support their provision of services to homeless women and children and those fleeing domestic violence.
The City has a 5-year Contract Agreement with the Government of Canada that runs from April 2019 to March of 2024. This is year three of this agreement, with two more years left of additional annual funding. $2,000,000 of Reaching Home funding has been distributed to-date.
“We have been able to successfully assist our community in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to the Reaching Home program through the Government of Canada,” said Mayor Kenny Bell. “On behalf of City Council, we thank the organizations involved for providing safe services to members of our community who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, homelessness.”
