Dark Days Ahead – Make Sure Your Lights Are On

October 26, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The days are getting shorter, and before long many of us will be heading to work in the dark and coming home in the dark.

As we settle into another Iqaluit winter, the City’s Municipal Enforcement Department is reminding everyone to check that their headlights and taillights are on when driving after dark or when visibility is poor.

Daytime running lights can be a little misleading. You may see light in front of you and assume you are good to go, while your taillights are still off. That makes your vehicle much harder for others to see from behind.

Many newer vehicles have an automatic setting that takes care of this for you. The catch is simple: AUTO only works if the switch is actually set to AUTO.

Before heading out, take a second to check. Headlights? On. Taillights? On. It’s a pretty short

checklist.

With darker days, snow and reduced visibility ahead, we all have a part to play in keeping our roads safe. Being able to see is important, but so is making sure your neighbours can see you.

Territorial and Municipal laws require headlights and taillights when visibility conditions require them. Not using them may result in a $100 fine. Auxiliary lights also have rules and may only be used on municipal roadways when they are mounted below the vehicle’s factory headlights.

We’re all sharing the same roads this winter. Turn on your lights, make yourself easy to see, and

help everyone get home safely.
