Safe Charging Starts at Home
October 2, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to remind residents that Fire Prevention Week takes place from October 4 to 10, 2026.
This year’s theme is “Safe Charging is a Superpower,” with a focus on the safe charging and disposal of lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries are found in many everyday items, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools and toys. Damaged batteries, improper charging and incorrect disposal can increase the risk of fire.
Residents are reminded to:
- use the charger that came with the device, or one approved by the manufacturer;
- charge devices on a hard, flat surface and away from beds, couches and other materials that can trap heat;
- unplug devices once they are fully charged;
- stop using batteries that are swollen, unusually hot, leaking, smoking or giving off an unusual smell; and
- keep lithium-ion batteries out of regular household garbage.
Lithium-ion batteries can be brought to the City landfill for safe disposal. Ampere, formerly known as Pinnguaq Association, also collects e-waste locally for recycling and educational programming.
During Fire Prevention Week, members of the Iqaluit Fire Department will visit local schools to share fire prevention and safety information with youth.
Families are also encouraged to take a few minutes at home to check chargers and battery-powered devices, review safe charging habits, and make sure everyone knows where used or damaged devices and batteries can be taken for disposal.
Safe charging and proper disposal are simple ways residents can help reduce the risk of preventable fires in Iqaluit.
