Additional Update Regarding August 24 Animal Control Incident

September 4, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

 

The City of Iqaluit would like to provide residents with an update regarding the dog attack incident that occurred on August 24.

On August 28, the owner of the dog suspected to have been involved in the incident voluntarily surrendered the animal to the care of the City’s Municipal Enforcement Department.

Prior to surrendering the dog, the owner had attempted to arrange for the animal to be euthanized through a veterinary service; however, this service was not available locally.

Following the incident, Public Health directed the Municipal Enforcement Department to retain the dog for a mandatory ten-day observation period. That required observation period concluded on September 3.

Following completion of the observation period, the dog was euthanized on September 3.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

The City recognizes the concern this incident has caused within the community and understands that residents may have questions as the investigation continues. The City thanks residents for their patience while the appropriate authorities complete their work.

The City will provide further information if additional updates become available.
