Animal Control and Community Safety

August 25, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

 

The City of Iqaluit recognizes the serious concern within the community following the dog attack reported on August 24, 2026. Incidents involving aggressive or at-large dogs can have a significant impact on residents, families, and the broader community, and the City remains committed to supporting community safety through its animal control responsibilities.

Municipal Enforcement responds to a range of animal-related concerns, including dogs at large, animal complaints, dog bites, animal cruelty, deceased animals, and other matters that fall under the City’s animal control authorities. Officers also conduct proactive patrols and make efforts to capture dogs found at large.

To date in 2026, Municipal Enforcement has recorded:

• 64 dogs-at-large complaints;
• 73 dogs impounded;
• 42 dogs returned to their owners;
• 22 dogs adopted;
• 9 dogs destroyed;
• 54 proactive attempts to capture dogs;
• 17 dog-bite incidents reported and investigated;
• 7 animal-cruelty complaints;
• 11 deceased-dog complaints; and
• 1 cat complaints.

The dog attack reported on August 24, 2026 is currently under investigation by the RCMP, which is the lead investigating agency for that incident. Municipal Enforcement is supporting the response as required and will take any appropriate action available under the City’s animal control authorities. Questions specific to the RCMP investigation should be directed to the Iqaluit RCMP.

The City encourages residents to report dogs at large and other animal-control concerns as soon as possible. Timely reporting helps Municipal Enforcement respond to concerns, identify recurring issues, and take appropriate action to help protect residents and animals in our community.
