Dump Fire Extinguished

July 3, 2026 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

 

The City of Iqaluit would like to advise residents that the fire at the City landfill was considered extinguished at approximately 11:15 PM last night. A Sanitation staff member remained on scene overnight to maintain a fire watch and monitor for any flare-ups.

Crews remain in the area today to continue monitoring the scene and ensure conditions remain safe. The roadway has now reopened to traffic. Residents are asked to continue using caution in the area and to follow any direction from crews on site.

The City thanks residents for avoiding the area while emergency crews responded. We understand the roadway leading to causeway access is important to many residents, and the temporary restriction helped ensure firefighters and support crews had the space needed to safely and effectively fight the fire.

In addition to the landfill fire, the Iqaluit Fire Department responded to two residential fires overnight, at approximately 3:25 AM and 4:16 AM. Fire crews remained operational throughout the night and successfully responded to all three incidents.

The City extends its sincere thanks to the Iqaluit Fire Department for their fast response, professionalism, and hard work throughout a very busy night.

The City also recognizes the important support provided by Public Works Roads, Public Works Trucked Services, and the Public Works Sanitation Team during the landfill fire. Their work helped maintain access for emergency vehicles, support firefighting operations, and move landfill materials with heavy equipment.

Thank you as well to Municipal Enforcement and City contractor Nunavut Excavating for their support during the response.

The City appreciates the efforts of all staff, contractors, emergency responders, and residents for their cooperation and support.
