Bringing Your Voice to City Council

May 8, 2026 Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit is sharing more information about what it means to serve as a City Councillor and what residents can expect in the role.

The application period for the vacant City Councillor position is now open and will close on Friday, May 22, 2026.

Being a Councillor is a chance to take part in shaping the future of our community. Councillors help guide decisions that affect Iqaluit as a whole, bringing forward ideas, concerns, and opportunities that support the well-being of residents.

You do not need a background in government or a specific level of education to serve on Council. People from many different backgrounds bring valuable perspectives. Lived experience, community knowledge, and a willingness to listen, learn, and participate are all important in this role. If you care about your community, your voice is valuable at the Council table.

Council works as a team. Members come together with different perspectives, have open discussions, and make decisions collectively during Council meetings. While conversations can be lively, Councillors are expected to treat one another with respect, focus on the issues, and support Council’s decisions once they are made.

The role includes:

  • Taking part in regular Council and committee meetings
  • Reviewing information in advance to stay informed
  • Making thoughtful, fair decisions that consider the needs of the whole community
  • Respecting confidentiality when required
  • Avoiding conflicts between personal interests and public responsibilities

Councillors are also expected to listen to residents, stay informed on community issues, and contribute to a respectful and constructive environment both in meetings and in public.

This is a part-time role that requires preparation, participation, and a genuine interest in the community.

The successful candidate selected by Council will be appointed to serve for the remainder of the current Council term, ending in October 2027.
