Cover Your Load When Transporting Waste
June 25, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit would like to remind all residents and businesses of the importance of covering their loads when transporting waste to the landfill. As stated in the City of Iqaluit’s Traffic Safety By-law #943, it is mandatory to cover all loads to prevent litter and ensure safety.
Relevant By-law Sections:
• Section 2.44: All loads of waste transported within the city must be securely covered to prevent any spillage or littering during transit.
• Schedule “A” - Section 2.44(1): Failure to cover garbage and waste material can result in a fine of $250.
• Schedule “A” - Section 2.44(2): Failure to secure materials requiring straps or other approved securement device can result in a fine of $500.
Why This is Important:
• Environmental Protection: Covering your load helps prevent waste from scattering, reducing litter and environmental contamination.
• Road Safety: Uncovered loads can create hazardous conditions for other drivers by obstructing visibility and causing accidents.
• Community Cleanliness: Ensuring waste is properly contained during transport keeps our streets and neighborhoods clean and pleasant.
Tips for Proper Load Covering:
1. Use Tarps: Secure tarps tightly over your load with ropes or bungee cords.
2. Netting: For bulkier items, consider using a cargo net to keep everything in place.
3. Regular Checks: Before setting off, double-check that your cover is secure and won't come loose.
These measures are in place to maintain the cleanliness of our city and protect the environment. Your cooperation is appreciated.
