Civic Long Weekend Road Safety Program
August 8, 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducted random sobriety and road safety check stops throughout the City of Iqaluit on the August civic long weekend.
Approximately 125 vehicles were checked throughout the operation. 17 vehicles were found to be operating without the required documents in the vehicle, 5 vehicles were found with illegal coating of sunscreen or tint on their windows, 3 drivers were found operating their vehicle without carrying their driver’s license on them as required, along with various other traffic violations.
Most vehicles that approached the check stop officers observed both driver and passengers were not wearing their seat belts, which is required under territorial and municipal law and subject to a $125.00 fine.
In addition 3 drivers found to be operating their vehicle while intoxicated, they were taken off the road and had criminal impaired driving charges laid against them.
The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department would like to thank the general public for their compliance in driving safe, and would like to remind the public if you suspect an impaired driver on the road to contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at 867-979-1111 immediately.
