Landfill Fire – Fire Extinguished
April 06, 2022 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Shortly before 12:00 PM the fire at the city landfill was extinguished.

Various parties came together quickly and effectively, in the early hours of the morning, to fight this fire. The City would like to extend special thanks to:

• The City of Iqaluit Emergency Services Fire Fighters for their efforts to extinguish this fire in inclement weather.
• The City of Iqaluit Public Works department for quickly mobilizing on site to provide the necessary water to address the fire.
• City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement for maintaining a secure site.
• The Iqaluit Airport for providing a mobile command post.
• Nunavut Excavating for quickly mobilizing on site with an excavator.
• The RCMP for their roll as first responders to the site.

The road to the landfill (Akilliq Road past the tank farm) will remain temporarily closed while final site cleanup takes place.

Increased monitoring of the site will be ongoing, to ensure no flare ups occur.

On Thursday April 7th the City of Iqaluit landfill will reopen and trucked water services will resume.
