Traffic and Vehicle Safety Enforcement
November 28, 2023 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department conducted random Sobriety and Road Safety Traffic Enforcement throughout the City of Iqaluit on Friday November 24th and Saturday November 25th 2023.

The following citations were issued to drivers, eleven (11) operating motor vehicle without headlight or tails lights, two (2) obstructed license plates, four (4) fail to carry required documents in vehicle, two (2) operate motor vehicle without valid registration, one (1) operate motor vehicle without valid insurance, four (4) disobey traffic control device, Six (6) speeding 17-29 km/h over posted speed limit, along with various other traffic violations.

Eight (8) taxi’s were inspected under the City of Iqaluit Taxi Bylaw 590 for mechanical and cleanliness requirements, subsequent to the inspections one (1) taxi driver was charged under the Liquor Act of Nunavut for unlawfully transporting, carrying, or having liquor in taxi, and the liquor seized.

Six (6) drivers were taken off the road for impaired operation of a conveyance, and received immediate roadside suspensions, four (4) were issued 24 hour license suspensions and two (2) were issued 90 days license suspensions due to the amount of alcohol in their system and previous suspensions on record as allowed in the Traffic Safety Act of Nunavut. The two (2) 90 day suspended drivers were taken into custody and charged criminally by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department would like to thank the general public for those drivers that were stopped and were in compliance and driving safe, and would like to remind the public if you suspect an impaired driver on the road to contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at 867-979-1111 immediately.
