Toonik Tyme Civic Holiday Road Safety Program
April 16th 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement department, in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), conducted random sobriety and road safety checkstops and vehicle stops throughout the City of Iqaluit on the April 5th and 6th, over the Toonik Tyme long weekend.

Approximately 200 vehicles were checked throughout the operation with the below results

Non-impairment related offenses
• Four vehicles were found to be operating without the required documents in the vehicle and/or with expired registration.
• Two drivers were found to be operating a vehicle without carrying their driver’s license, as required by law.
• Two drivers were found to be operating a motor vehicle without valid insurance.
• Seven drivers were found with inoperable headlights or taillights.
• Two drivers were found to be speeding.
• Two drivers were found to disobey traffic control device.
• Additional citations were issued for various other traffic violations.

Officers observed that both the driver and passengers in most vehicles that approached the checkstop were not wearing their seat belts, which is required under territorial and municipal
law and subject to a $125.00 fine.

Impairment related offenses
• More than 40 roadside mandatory alcohol screening demands were performed:
o One driver was issued a roadside suspension for drug and alcohol impairment

o Nine drivers were issued roadside suspensions for alcohol impairment, one of which was a 30 day license suspension due to a previous suspension on record.
o Three individuals were arrested by the RCMP for impaired driving offences and charged criminally.
• One driver was issued a roadside suspension for drug impairment.
• One driver was issued a roadside suspension for fatigue.

Five vehicles were seized and impounded under territorial and municipal law, for impaired driving and other various offences.
