Sobriety and Road Safety Checkstop Results
December 11, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement Department conducted random sobriety and road safety checkstops, along with roving patrols, throughout the city over the weekend of December 6 and 7, 2024. Most vehicles contacted were compliant, with drivers carrying all required documents and operating their vehicles sober. However, officers observed that both drivers and passengers often failed to wear seat belts, a requirement under territorial and municipal law. Failure to comply with seat belt regulations can result in a $125 fine.
During the operation, one driver was issued a 90-day roadside suspension for drug impairment. Additionally, two drivers received 24-hour suspensions for alcohol impairment, three drivers were issued 30-day suspensions for alcohol impairment, and two drivers were handed 90-day suspensions for alcohol impairment. The length of these suspensions varies depending on factors such as prior offenses, the type of vehicle involved, and whether the driver was classified as a youth or novice.
Various other traffic violations were also addressed. Three drivers were found to have disobeyed traffic control devices, two drivers were caught speeding, including one at 17-29 km/h and another at 30-40 km/h over the posted speed limit. One driver failed to yield to an emergency vehicle, two vehicles were operated without functioning headlights or taillights, and one driver was found operating a vehicle without valid registration, insurance, and with misuse of a license plate. Additionally, thirteen taxis were inspected during the initiative.
The City of Iqaluit Municipal Enforcement Department thanks the public for their cooperation and compliance. Residents are reminded to always wear seat belts and adhere to all traffic laws. If you suspect an impaired driver, please contact the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at 867-979-1111 immediately.
Thank you for helping to ensure the safety of our roads.
