Safe Driving with Snow and Ice on Roads
November 15, 2024 – Iqaluit, Nunavut

Snow and ice are already covering Iqaluit’s roads, and temperatures are expected to remain just below the freezing point for the remainder of the season. The City of Iqaluit reminds motorists to exercise caution, as these conditions create very slippery roads, likely to persist throughout the week.

To drive safely during icy conditions, accelerate and brake gradually by applying gentle pressure to the gas and brake pedals, as sudden changes can lead to a loss of traction. Increase your following distance to keep a 6-10 second gap from the car ahead, which provides more time to stop safely on slippery surfaces. Reduce your speed to allow for better control on icy roads, and use low gears where possible, especially on hills, to help maintain traction. Steering smoothly is also essential, so avoid sudden or jerky turns. If your vehicle begins to skid, steer in the direction of the skid to regain control.

City road crews are working diligently to keep roads clear and sanded. Please give them space to perform their tasks, and help keep everyone safe by driving carefully.
