November 30, 2021 – Iqaluit, Nunavut
The City of Iqaluit was notified of a propylene glycol and water mixture spill near the hospital resulting from planned work, as part of a sewer upgrade project, that was being executed by the City’s contractor. Qulliq Energy Corporation immediately responded and closed the affected district heat system pipeline to prevent further spillage.
Various contractors and agencies will remain on site to contain and remediate the spill. The incident has also been reported to the Government of Nunavut’s Department of Environment who are providing support on how to manage the spill.
Propylene glycol is a clear, odourless, tasteless liquid found in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, and is relatively non-toxic to humans and wildlife.
