FIRE SAFETY AWARENESS FOR THE CITY OF IQALUIT –

 USING PROPER CIGARETTE BUTT CANS

JULY 19, 2019 (IQALUIT, NUNAVUT) - Watch for weekly fire safety reminders this summer to help prevent fires in our community.

The use of a proper cigarette butt container can prevent fires within the community. Please keep the cans away from any flammable objects and do not keep on doorsteps or balconies.

Multi-plex building owners should consider designating one communal smoking location away from any property.

The City would like to remind residents to make sure receptacles placed properly, maintained regularly and that cigarette butts are disposed correctly to avoid fires involving cigarette receptacles. Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out before throwing them in the trash can. Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash.

When smoking, please ensure to be nine (9) metres from any entrance to or exit from an apartment building or any public place (By Law 863). Most home fires caused by smoking materials start inside the home. If smoking outside, discard cigarettes and ashes in a can filled with sand and never throw cigarettes on the ground.

For questions on what is a proper cigarette butt can, residents may visit the fire hall during regular business hours, Monday to Friday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM.
