The Public Works and Engineering Department is responsible for the essential services in the city that include water and sewer services, road maintenance, garbage and waste collection and the maintenance of all municipal buildings. The Department is structured into five operational divisions, each with a foreman who is responsible for the day-to-day operations and delivery of quality services within each division.

Garage and Roads
Responsible for the maintenance of city roads and surface infrastructure including street signs, culverts, and walkways. This includes snow clearing, removing blockages from culverts and ensuring roads and walkway are safe for Iqalummuit.
Waste Management and Municipal Landfill
Responsible for the collection of residential and commercial waste, including the scheduling of cardboard waste pick up and regular waste and the management of the municipal landfill.

NOTE: For holidays, garbage will be collected either the day before or the day after the holiday, depending on when it falls during a week.

Utilidor
Responsible for maintenance of the water treatment plant (potable water supply), sewage treatment facility (sewage and waste water) and the maintenance of all subsurface infrastructure including access vaults, sewer and water pipes and the operation and maintenance of water booster, reheat, and lift stations.
Other Department Responsibilities
Maintenance of the municipal cemetery, and the maintenance of certain city buildings and facilities.
