Municipal Enforcement

The Municipal Enforcement Department is responsible for the enforcement of the City of Iqaluit's municipal by-laws in addition to selected territorial and federal, acts and regulations that are designated within their authority by the territorial government. The department remains committed to doing this while maintaining the trust and confidence of Iqalummiut through pro-active enforcement and demonstration of core values that include integrity, professionalism, excellence and teamwork.

Traffic Enforcement

Municipal Enforcement conducts regular traffic controls within the city. We are responsible for enforcing offences under the Motor Vehicles Act, the All-Terrain Vehicles Act and municipal traffic by-laws. Offences under these acts include speeding, impaired driving, driving unregistered vehicles, large vehicle offences, operating snowmobiles and ATVs without a helmet among many others. We also work closely with Iqalummiut to educate and raise awareness about safe driving and injury prevention. Loose Dogs

NOTE: OPERATIONAL HOURS ARE CURRENTLY FROM 7AM TO 5PM MONDAY TO FRIDAY, AFTER HOURS ON CALL COMPLAINTS AND INQUIRIES MAY BE MADE BY CONTACT CITY OF IQALUIT DISPATCH AT 979-5650 . FOR NOISE COMPLANTS OUTSIDE OF THE SPECIFIED QUIET HOURS FROM 10:00 PM TO 7:00 AM MAY BE DIRECTED TO THE RCMP.

As part of the department's enforcement of city and territorial animal control laws, stray dogs are picked up and taken to the city's pound. Every effort is made to locate and contact the animal's owner within 72 hours of the dog being picked up. If you have lost your dog, you are encouraged to contact dispatch at 979 5650. Loose dogs will also be posted on the City website as well as other social media platforms (Facebook) as they are picked up. We continue to work closely with the humane society to find homes for dogs that come into our care that are unclaimed.

Noise & Nuisances

Extreme noise can be a disturbance to your neighbours. Noise infractions include barking dogs, vehicle noise, parties and construction. Being a good neighbour means respecting the noise by-law that states quiet hours are from 10:00 PM - 7:00 AM. Causing a noise disturbance can result in a fine under the Noise By-law.
